A Family Legacy Restored  ·  Welches, Oregon

The Situation

This project began as a restoration following water damage from the 2024 Portland freeze, but quickly evolved into a full-scale reimagining for a multigenerational family. The absentee client, living in the Bay Area, initially planned to repair the property purchased by their parents over 25 years ago. As discussions progressed, it became clear the original 1973 layout could not accommodate visits from three adult children, spouses, and potential future grandchildren.

The Work

Collaborating closely with the client and architect, Sapphire reconfigured the unit — relocating the kitchen to capture natural light, repositioning bedrooms, and creating custom built-in bunk and trundle beds — while opening the kitchen, living, and dining areas for family gatherings. Through Curation, heirloom pieces and furnishings connected the family to the home's history. Transformation involved new walnut flooring, custom cabinetry, quartzite countertops, marble backsplashes, and luxury appliances, along with an accessible master bathroom designed for aging in place. In Manifestation, every detail was thoughtfully curated — from lighting plans with dimmers to furniture, upholstery, pillows, and window treatments.

The Result

Sapphire served as the client's eyes and ears on site, ensuring the project remained on schedule and on budget despite her absence, resulting in a home that is both elegant and deeply livable.
